GEOFF TORKINGTON |
Geoff’s initiation into spiritual practice came in Japan during a Zen sesshin, in which one meditates almost nonstop for four and a half days with the majority of the meditation involving continuous screaming. Following the third day, he asked the Zen master for advice. The master said, "You know, two of your fellow meditators had the experience we were pushing you toward, the passing of the mu koan. Those two of seven passed because of you, because of your intensity, but you failed to have the awakening because you went full power and stopped, full power and stopped. It doesn't work that way." Contemplating this, Geoff, a Taurus, went to India to pursue meditation. He met Swami Vivekananda and Agama in his first days there, took six weeks of courses and, for the time being, continued traveling throughout India, practicing Buddhist meditation and exploring ashram life. Two years later, in the midst of some health crises in addition to worsening scoliosis, he restarted his Yoga practice. Soon after, he arrived in Thailand only to learn on a poster that Agama had moved there and would host a retreat to start in a matter of days. This set in motion what has blossomed into 18 months of teachings with the school spread over three seasons. In early 2006, he began to teach and lecture at Agama's Thailand center. Geoff's strong teaching presence, his proficiency in the practice, and an honest, loving nature have made his classes popular and effective. At this juncture, Geoff continues to be philosophical and contemplative: Who can say what another meeting with the Zen master might bring? No doubt a few more insightful words to meditate on and a subtle smile in recognition of the years of work done and the work yet to be done. |
